Nightmare on Elm Street is Go, Shooting in Spring

Platinum Dunes is going to continue its working relationship with Warner Bros. and New Line for A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Since Comic-Con in July, it was unknown whether producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form were going to be involved in the reboot of the Freddy Krueger franchise. But today, Fuller and Form confirmed to ShockTillYouDrop.com that their deal is done. "It's our next movie," confirmed Form, "hopefully shooting this spring."

Over the summer, Wesley Strick (Cape Fear) was attached to pen the script which is intended to re-imagine the dream-hopping teen killer. "It's like what we're doing to Friday the 13th," says Fuller. "It's not Freddy cracking jokes. We want to make a horrifying movie. The concept is so scary, don't fall asleep or you'll die. This guy gets you when you're most vulnerable, in your sleep. We love that. That's the basis of the movie. It'll be most similar to the first one but in terms of kills and dreams we'll borrow from the entire series."

Shooting is expected to take place in the Chicago suburbs.

Fuller adds that Warner Bros.' positive response to Friday the 13th was very helpful in getting Nightmare off the ground. Test screenings for Jason Voorhees' latest outing have reportedly gone over great.

Addressing the great, incessant question: Will Robert Englund be back? Fuller and Form say they're seeking someone new to don the hat and red 'n green sweater, but they're hopeful Englund will be back for a part in the film.

There'll be plenty of people who will ***** and moan about Englund not being Freddy, but it's time to move on. I'm behind the idea of getting a fresh (though mutilated) face.

This might be interesting. I was never a big fan of the original NOES movie as it was just soooo lame (imho), so a reboot in this case, might be a good idea.

I say get Johnny Depp to play Freddy. Not only a great homage to Johnny's first movie, but Depp would be so damn great in that role it would unbelievable. I think he could bring something truly scary to the role (think Edward Scissorhands meets Sweeney Todd).

@Iloveslasherfilms!

No he wouldn't, that's a horrible idea. The last thing this world needs is another movie with Johnny Depp turning another classic character into some obnoxiously flamboyant stereotype.

We get it, you can play an eccentric loner. It's time to play something else now.

I don't mind remakes, because the original movies still exist no matter what. The "Nightmare" series is one of my favorites (I bought the DVD box set way back in 1999 when it first came out), and I think remaking it is a great idea. The original is still scary, but pretty dated. I'd love to see what they could create with today's special effects as well. Robert Englund will always be Freddy, of course, but I agree that they should find someone new to separate this new film from the original series.

I for one love Johnny Depp...
He reminds me of my emo boyfriend, except more girly.
They should make him play all of the roles.

Holy crapsicle, Johnny Depp would be perfect.

Johnny Depp is Disney's ***** for the next five years. It's doubtful he'd break that relationship for Krueger right now.

I'm just so sick to death of people saying depp for every goddamn role.

I mean don't you people have any other ideas?

Oh yeah lets get deep, i'm just so damn sick to death of him for every thing people want.

Geez, god!

I mean how about someone like T-Bag from Prison Break? Or what he isn't pretty enough? It's a scared up killer, his face doesn't matter!

Johnny Depp for Freddy!

My vote goes to Jackie Earle Haley.

(Ben Foster) Will be the perfect Freddy

Crispen Glover for Freddie

You don't want a popular actor in the role cause he could possibly play Freddie in more than one movie and if it is a big name like Johnny Depp or someone then the actor might change in every NOES movie. And you don't want that.

I like your idea of Jackie Earle Haley, Ryan!

I also like the thought of Robert Patrick.

I made a fan poster with Billy Bob Thorton [from the old rumour mill] edited to look like Freddy....check it out =] -

Billy Bob Thorton is Freddy, Its already been confirmed by billy bob and Robert Englund, Google it, TMZ it, Whatever you want to do its been reported for about 3 months now

Posted by: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor on December 11, 2008 at 22:25:20

Dan, that rumored was debunked well over three months ago. Billy Bob IS NOT Krueger. Fuller and Form don't even know where that came from.

Posted by: GammaBob on December 11, 2008 at 22:26:46

Why can't these money hungry hollywood types just leave well enough alone? I will be seeing Friday the 13th opening night because I'm a hardcore Jason fan but I have to say I'm not optomistic about it. Same goes with this.

Posted by: GammaBob on December 11, 2008 at 22:29:40

Maybe I'm just getting too old for Hollywood and the music industry....especially considering my opinion on most movies and music released these days is that they are crap, but somehow the young people seem to think it's good. god, what a depressing thought that is......especially considering I'm only 29!! What the hell am I going to have to turn to for decent entertainment 10 years from now??

This is very, very sad news to me. I truly had hoped this would never happen, and that the deal would have fallen through.

Posted by: Nelson on December 11, 2008 at 22:48:16

This has to be the most disappointing news I've ever read. I don't care if it's "typical" or "cliche" to be unhappy with the fact that Robert Englund will not be returning as Freddy....it's a travesty. No one, no one is going to fill his shoes.

Freddy has always been such a unique villain for slasher movies. He is totally and utterly defined by Robert's portrayal, right down to his look and mannerisms. Unlike Dracula and even Pinhead, the Freddy that we got on the big screen didn't originate in a book or anything else. That makes him unique, and it should be enough to merit not replacing him with another actor.

And what is this rubbish about Robert Englund being in the movie? What an insult. He's good enough to put in the movie, but God forbid we let him be the villain. And I don't want to hear a thing about Robert's age being a factor, he deserved at least one more outing as Freddy, and for awhile it at least seemed like there was a chance of that happening. Now, that goes out the window with this news.

And what is this about a non wise cracking Freddy? I guess I must have some type of re-edited version of the original, because Freddy seems to be delivering one-liners in my copy. He's always had a dark sense of humor. The solution to it becoming more prevalent in the sequels is simple...scale back on it. It worked wonderfully in Wes Craven's New Nightmare. You don't just take it away completely.

Terrifying Nightmare movie my foot. The people making this are incapable of making a scary movie, and that's not really up for debate. And taking influence from the Friday remake? So you're doing a movie that could have easily just been a sequel to begin with?

This remake trend is appalling. At this rate, we'll be getting a remake of Saw within ten years. How sad.

@Iloveslasherfilms! I am totally with you on that idea. Johnny Depp as Freddy would be perfect.

Posted by: wesley on December 11, 2008 at 22:58:56

if Robert Englund doesen't come back to reprise
his legendary role as freddy this movie will be
a waist of time to remake cause nobody can replace the original freddy !!!!
