SDCC: Stewart, Bettany on Priest

Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
July 24, 2009

Legion director Scott Stewart enthusiastically spoke to Shock earlier today about the next project he's embarking on, Priest. Shooting is expected to begin late next month.

"I'm really excited about it," he said. "It's totally post-apocalyptic and based on the Korean manga. Hyung Min-Woo who created the book, we walked him through the art department and he was so gracious and so excited. It's like a cross between The Searchers and Blade Runner. It's super crazy, industrial theocracy cities and these crazy solar fueled cell motorcycles."

Stewart added he punched up the script, by Cory Goodman, and "focused on the mythology, expanded the universe. It's not a sexy vampire movie. It's a scary vampire movie. They don't look like people, it's going to be cool."

The director's leading man, Paul Bettany, agrees. "Our vampires are really grisly. Stakes don't quite do the trick." Bettany also stars for Stewart in Legion, in which he plays the archangel Michael. Priest finds him as a "vampire slaying priest and it's very western. Hopefully very chic and exciting."

He'll co-star with Cam Gigandet when Priest opens on August 12, 2010.

I really don't understand why this movie is called PRIEST because it clearly has nothing to do with the original source material. It does sound exciting but at the same time I'm disappointed because I really wanted to see it follow the actual comic which has an outstanding story. First of all there aren't any vampires in the comic, Ivan Isaacs doesn't have a niece, not set in a post-apocalyptic world, no damn solar fuel celled motorcycles, etc...

It seems like Hyung Minwoo liked what he saw so I'll keep an open mind. But damn! I really wish we got a proper priest movie with a priest shooting the **** out of satanic demons and zombies!

Priest from what I've read of it so far is a Zombie Western. No motorcycles, no Vampires, WTF.
