The Rotten Truth: This is Halloween?

Something about this fall scares me.

It's not the San Fernando Valley temperatures climbing into the 90s (which makes me feel nostalgic for the New England weather I grew up with). It doesn't have to do with Beverly Hills Chihuahua (although that is a cause for alarm, especially the slugs who go see it). Nor is it the grinning skeleton and pumpkin decorations I'm beginning to see flood the stores (that, in fact, gets me more anxious than anything).

No, what's making me leap out of my skin is the minimal amount of wide theatrical horror releases to get excited about in the next two months.

The Rotten Truth: The Strangers, Too

Pocketing a healthy $55.8 million worldwide gross, the modestly-budgeted thriller (estimated at $9 million) called The Strangers was an unknown factor. Plagued by a delay that bumped it from the summer of 2007 to the outskirts of this year's blockbuster season, the positive thing the film had going for it was an effective marketing campaign. Talk to anyone about it and they'd say, "That trailer was great!" Ultimately, it was a success and a film destined for franchise, with or without writer-director Bryan Bertino. The fellas at Rogue - not ones to screw around - decided it was in their best interest to bring the young Texan back to at least pen the inevitable sequel while juggling two other projects he has set up under Andrew Rona's regime. Because, as sources tell us, Rogue is "aggressively pursuing" a follow-up, something tells us we'll be seeing the Man in the Mask and his two home-hoppin' masked hotties sooner than later.

The Rotten Truth: Now THAT'S News!

Poltergeist is being remade.  Heather O'Rourke speaks from beyond the grave.  Campbell gets more hopes up for Evil Dead 4.  Will the Billy Bob Thornton/Freddy Krueger please be put down?  Possible Halloween spin-off stories.  And reflections on a masked serial killer.

All of this and more in: Now THAT'S news!

The Rotten Truth: Midnight Meat Train

Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train opens in theaters today.  Good luck trying to catch a ride.  In the wake of months of questionable decision-making concerning the Ryuhei Kitamura-directed film, Lionsgate opted to release the film on 100 screens (as previously reported) in bargain theaters only.  Websites are rallying together, initiating a move to seek out theaters selling tickets online, then buy as many as you're willing to pay for, even if you can't make the screening.  But I'm confused.  Who is this supporting, exactly?

Comic-Con Wrap-Up

"I spotted you at Comic-Con on Saturday, but you were sitting on a hallway floor, furiously typing on your laptop with such a pained expression that I dared not interrupt you."

That came in an e-mail from a friend the other day.  I thought it was pretty funny and an accurate assessment of how many people found me at this year's Comic-Con.  On the floor.  Hammering out coverage.  Catching my breath.  The pained expression probably being a result of...well, I don't know: Determination?  Concentration?  Or maybe I was just hung over.  Needless to say, Comic-Con is over and a good week after my five-day run there, I'm finding the time to bang out a blog.

My First and Favorite "Friday the 13th"

New Jersey, October 1987

The very first Friday the 13th I ever saw was during this time.  For some reason that has been lost to the dark pockets of my brain, my parents dropped me off at my grandmother's house on an archetypal Halloween weekend on the East Coast.  Blustery wind.  Leaves tumbling in streams around the feet of the local kids trick 'r treating the streets.  I had clue who Jason Voorhees was, but I wanted to be him real bad.  Kids at school talked about this machete-wielding psycho.  I had seen a few television ads, but the instant I expressed any fascination with what was on screen my parents changed the channel.  Jason Voorhees was a no-no in the Rotten household.

A Shyamalan, Hulk, Jolie Three-Way

Happy Friday the 13th, fiends.

The end of a another chaotic week and the start of a weekend of outdoors-y camping action for me (sex, drinking and rock 'n roll may be on order to see if I can summon up ol' Voorhees ).  Seven days ago I hopped on a plane and set off for Austin, Texas to reunite with pals/producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form to see what kind of hell they were raising on the set of Friday the 13th.   In the days that followed, I found myself playing a zombie on the latest Jeffrey Combs film and taking in three more summer movie screenings.  More details after the jump.

June: Dead on Arrival (May in a Nutshell)

Summer movies and furious weather.  Set visits galore and remembering the classics.  Another month draws to an end.  All that I've wanted to talk about in the last two weeks has been backed up like a bladder about to burst.  So, allow me to grab a scalpel and carve out some thoughts about the month that was May.

Making a Date with "Jennifer's Body" & Musings on a Set Visit

As I write this, I'm sky-high en route to Vancouver.  I've got a script by Diablo Cody in my bag - it's a mix of Evil Dead II and Heathers and any other smart-ass teen comedies you can conjure up (Juno naturally springs to mind, as does Idle Hands - which isn't as bad as I remember making it out to be when it came out).  All 114 pages of Cody's latest are joined by a DVD copy of Trick or Treat - pure '80s wannabe franchise trash that harnessed the mixture of horror and rock 'n roll that have unequivocally been bonded to one another.  And with it, a copy of Hack/Slash: Friday the 31st, a compilation of this comic book's first four issues, since going monthly, which finds its heroine, Cassie, and her partner, Vlad, up against  a lame-o hair metal band dabbling in Satanic goofiness.  All of these things come together thematically and for good reason...I'm heading the set of Jennifer's Body.
