EXCL: Candyman Remake Buzz at Sony
Source:Ryan Rotten
August 15, 2008
Hear that? No, that's not the sound of bees. It's the buzz, buzz, buzzing of another remake. And this time it's Bernard Rose's Clive Barker adaptation Candyman.Shock learned today Sony and the rights holder to the film franchise - which has spanned three installments - are mulling over plans to resurrect the hook-handed, pimp coat wearin' urban legend made famous by Tony Todd. It's all "early talks" (I was told one idea was to make the titular killer a Caucasian fella) with no writer or director attached at this time.
Candyman's screen life - based on Barker's short story The Forbidden - began in '92 at Sony. He subsequently bounced from Polygram then to Artisan for the sequels Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman: Day of the Dead, respectively. The third chapter was released in '99.
The original film starred Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkeley and Kasi Lemmons.
Some can balk that it's too soon (or downright unnecessary) for a remake, but for Sony, it makes sense given the spate of remakes over the last five years dredging up revamped cinematic massacres featuring everyone from Leatherface, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees to even Harry Warden. Candyman represents one established horror icon they have in their vaults they could potentially bank on (Richard Fenton from Prom Night is going to cut it).
You almost knew it was coming. A Candyman remake was inevitable. The gears are in motion and we'll keep you updated as we hear more.

**** HOLLYWOOD!
Where's the originality. Last decentl original film i watched was Funny Games...oh yeah, a shot for shot remake of the german classic!
WHAT'S THE POINT?

A Candyman remake IS unnessecary!
Candyman is a brilliant, scary and beautiful film. It's like watching a horror/opera. There is no ****ing way they could remake this movie and make it any better.
What are they going to do? Throw in some digital effects and some teens?
I'm getting real sick of this ****.

This is really pissing me off too...How can anyone out there think of a vaild reason to remake such a classic. Theres a whole generation of us who grew up to scared to even think about saying 'CANDYMAN' in the mirror..before we'd even seen the film. This is not gonna happen with stupid kids today. Leave it alone Sony!

Why?! WHYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!
Posted by: noob on August 15, 2008 at 08:49:37

ok hollywood needs to wake up and stop now! no more remakes! and a Candyman remake. WHY? Candyman was not that good of a flick. It ruined Clive Barkers story which is a 1000 times better. Candyman was just plain wack!

This is beyond a joke! Why, I mean why???

Great, Hollywood pillaged all they could from the 70's and 80's, so now they're going after 90's movies?! Just wait, in a few weeks we'll get the "Tremors" re-dux announced, and by next year it'll be "Scream"!

Hey Ryan, instead of being punished by a screening of this abortion of an idea, let's watch the original on my plasma. I'll bring Tony Todd, you bring the beer. ;)
A remake. Whatever.

i loved the original, but this sounds like a revisioning rather than a remake.
if they make candyman white, they're gonna need to change his entire back story, making the whole thing new!
i'm much more up for that, than them butchering this classic. i'm ok with them borrowing the premesis for new story.

Jesus, why? The greatness of this movie can't really be duplicated: the direction was amazing, Virginia Madsen was fantastic, the score by Philip Glass captured the "sexy + scary" formula of the whole thing. And Tony Todd IS the Candyman. Just like Englund IS Krueger. These aren't masked villains. But hey, I'm all up for a stronger presence of African-American actors in horror movies (that aren't stupid sidekicks or machete-fodder) so if you are remaking it, give the role to a black man God damn it! UGH!

Hollywood needs to burn to ground.

Dude, Jonk...
Haven't you learned anything from past REIMAGININGS? Planet of the Apes? Halloween? The Omen? That reimagining was a shot for shot remake?
No good can come from this. It's not like the old days where a remake was given care and kindness like David Cronenberg's The Fly or John Carpenter's The Thing. It's just going to be another pointless piece of **** that misses the point completely.

This could work, if they go the route of "just another adapation of the Clive Barker story", rather than remaking another film based on it. If Dracula can do it, why can't another literary monster do it? I'm just hoping that Barker gets involved somehow.

How about Candyman4 and not a remake.
Posted by: Captain Arlong on August 15, 2008 at 18:05:14
Ok, now it's getting out of hand..
Posted by: erich on August 15, 2008 at 18:55:55
As long as people keep going to see them, even if it's "just to see how bad they ****ed it up" or whatever the reason they will keep making them. just do what i do and DO NOT GO TO THE THEATERS to see it DO NOT RENT OR BUY IT when the dvd comes out. if everyone keeps *****ing but then ends up dishing out money on it they will continue to do it. instead of *****ing and complaining do something about it. boycott the film. talk your friends out of seeing it.

I'm still waiting for Candyman 4: In Space!
Posted by: Death dealer on August 16, 2008 at 02:37:12
Wow. This movie is not that old. What are they going remake next? Saw or Jeepers Creepers?
Posted by: Caterpillar on August 16, 2008 at 13:43:55
How about greenlighting one of gazillion Clive Barker movie projects that have vanished in development hell over the past 20 years? How about creating a new franchise instead of trying to reboot a not-really-established one?
Posted by: Z3RO on August 18, 2008 at 08:58:59
is it me or did they also say they're going to make CANDYMAN a WHITE PERSON!?!?!?!
WTF ARE THEY ****ING IGNORANT!!!!!!!?!?!?
****ing idiots... and I SAY THAT WITH HATE!
Posted by: tam35354646 on August 18, 2008 at 10:45:23
Guys. This is getting rediculous. You cannot justify these remakes as the acting is terribel. And the original plot is contradicted far too much in the remake.
Now, the one remake that would succeed is Jaws. The modern day Effects would make this remake mesmirising. Just look at cloverfield.
Does anyone agree???

y the **** do u people have 2 remake so many good horror classics. next well be watchin a remake of freddy vs jason

You're a god damn failure.

Candyman was one of my favourite horrors. You can't just remake it. Now if they change certain story elements or not it will still be compared to the original and it will probably either make a lot of money for the assmasters who go see it or be bashed by everyone like lost boys 2. I for one hope they don't remake it! Sure it wasn't perfect but with horror now a days its not even horror. Horror was much better in the 80's and early 90's now it is either watered down pg13 bull**** or torture porn like Saw or Hostel. There is no happy medium!
