Romero's Survival of the Dead Finds a Home
Source: Magnet Releasing
December 18, 2009
George A. Romero's latest zombie offering, Survival of the Dead, has found U.S. distribution.
Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that they have the rights. Magnet will release the film as part of its Ultra VOD program this spring, debuting it on VOD platforms nationwide a month before its theatrical release. Hopefully, the scope of its theatrical bow will be larger than Diary of the Dead's release in the hands of Dimension Films.
Like its predecessors, Survival of the Dead takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living.
It is the story of Plum Island – a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: the O’Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept "alive" until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence.
Says Romero, "I'm a big admirer of the team at Magnolia. They’re creative and passionate, and I'm excited to put Survival in their hands."
When a release date comes to light, we'll let you know. For now, check out some stills and video previews here!

Well sorta good I guess...but still nothing solid. Wonder if this will pop up on HDNet on Dish? Still might just grab the UK blu-ray in a few months to save me the searching!

DIARY was alright, but not as good as LAND. I hope this one is better. And I hope George is keeping the "sidequel" feel, as this would most likelu be happening around the same time as DAWN. Maybe George is really leading to a film involving a cure.

I knew recent reports of this film not being able to secure distrbution were garbage. Especially in light of both "Diary" and "Land" turning a profit.

Sounds like a solid edition to the series. The only one I didn't like was Land of the Dead.

It sorta echoes - to me anyway - Day of the Dead.

Great another piece of crap zombie flick "with a message"

"Land of the dead" was just plain weak compared to the remake of "dawn of the dead". The pace was too slow, and too few hungry killer zombies - 6 billion people on earth, mostly dead, and we see just a handful of the same ones? The social/political plot line was boring, too much time spent on the class distinctions not enough on the essence of zombie operas - the struggle for personal and "wolf pack" survival against overwhelming odds. What happened to chewing up zombie guts with mini-guns, flamethrowers, and cannons shooting steel frisbees? The final insults were the pseudo-hero not drilling "smarter zombie's" head into a bloody stump and happy face survivors driving off into hopeful future celebrating with fireworks - total crap!
Survival of the dead better be twice the movie "land of the dead" could have been or Romero is done. In the end there is no possibility of hope only the resignation that you MAY have another day, and probably not. No one gets out of here alive in any case - fantasy or reality.

@Hammer
"Land", for all it's flaws (i.e. Big Daddy and heavy handed Marxist overtones) is a far better movie than the slick hollywood Dawn remake. Just in terms of on-screen gut munching, "Land" delivers the visceral goods. Romero, like George Lucas, still has the magic. He just needs a collaborator to help refine and finesse his ideas. Max Brooks anyone?
